Problem
Many desktop phone stands are fixed in position, limiting usability across different viewing scenarios such as video calls, media consumption, and multitasking. The challenge was to design a mount that not only supports a device securely but also introduces mechanical adjustability while remaining compact, stable, and easy to use.
Solution
The final design, FlexAngle, is an adjustable acrylic phone dock that incorporates a pivot mechanism to allow quick angle changes. By combining a stable base with a simple rotational joint, the design enables flexible positioning while maintaining structural integrity and a minimal form.
This project focuses on designing a mechanically functional desktop accessory that interacts directly with an everyday device. The goal was to create a mount that enhances usability through adjustability, while maintaining a clean and efficient structure.

The design process began with exploring different mounting strategies, including fixed stands, folding supports, and multi-link mechanisms. The key direction shifted toward a pivot-based system that allows continuous angle adjustment while keeping the structure simple and intuitive.

Early prototypes were built using paper and cardboard to test range of motion, balance, and user interaction. These iterations helped determine the optimal pivot placement, support angle, and base geometry needed to maintain stability while supporting the weight of a smartphone.

The final design uses laser-cut acrylic components assembled with a pivot joint, allowing smooth angle adjustment with a single degree of freedom. The base is designed to distribute weight evenly, preventing tipping during use. The structure remains compact and lightweight, making it suitable for everyday desktop use.

The final outcome demonstrates how a simple mechanical system can significantly improve interaction with a device. By focusing on adjustability and stability, the design enhances functionality while maintaining a minimal and refined aesthetic.
